You can’t blame the filmmakers for being busy during quarantine. omnibus movie “The Endless Year of Storms” brings together pandemic-made shorts from around the world. But with just two of its seven episodes, this anthology uncannily reproduces the feeling of feeling trapped.
Highlights come before and after. Iranian Jafar Panahi, who had previously dealt with the restrictions of shooting at home (an extraordinary “This Is Not A Movie” At her apartment, defying the filmmaking ban), she presents a sweet little document of a cautious visit by her mother, who arrives in what appears to be a hazardous material outfit. He video chats with his granddaughter (sprays the phone with disinfectant first) and comes to an agreement with Panahi’s pet iguana, Iggy.
Apichatpong Weerasethakul from Thailand (“Uncle Boonmee Who Can Remember Past Lives”) closes this feature with a non-narrative short that mixes the echoes of tube lights and the buzz of insects. Weerasethakul recorded the sound himself, and at some point the fluttering of the insects seems to merge with the sizzling spoken words.
Other segments fall into the more predictable region. Set in China, Anthony Chen (“Wet Season”) is about the frenzy that stirs up two parents and their young son. In California, Malik Vitthal (“Body Camera”) stirs up the media, using camera phone footage and animation for a short documentary in which the coronavirus complicates an already complex detention situation. Chilean director Dominga Sotomayor (“Too Late to Die Young”) and American David Lowery (“Green Knight”) barely leave impressions.
And Laura Poitras (Edward Snowden doctor “Citizen Four”), working with London-based research group Forensic Architecture, creates an atmosphere of paranoia as they share highlights from an investigation into an Israeli cyberweapon manufacturer. But the short run time does not allow enough binding.
