‘The Free Man’ | Anatomy of a Scene

Director Shawn Levy describes a scene from the movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

Hi, I’m Shawn Levy. I am the director and one of the producers of “Free Guy”. This scene is a kind of turning point for the hero named Guy, an innocent bank teller played by Ryan Reynolds who gradually realizes that he is a background character in a video game. And in this fictional video game called Free City, we distinguish between NPCs, also known as non-player characters, and players who come and play the game in the real world and are identified by sunglasses. Sunglasses teach players about power-ups, weapons and hidden treasures in this video game city. So there were several different layers of aesthetic design in approaching “Free Guy.” The main and first was a really strict distinction between the video game world and the real world. So everything in the video game world is captured on a large format camera with spherical lenses, tremendous depth of field and clean composition. “Excuse me. See that?” I wanted it all to have added layers of saturation and overwhelming visual spectacle. Frankly, I wanted this sequence to be a bit overwhelming for the audience, as if there was just too much to take in. Because that’s exactly what Ryan’s character Guy is experiencing. I played a lot of video games while preparing for the movie. What I’ve come to see in the video games I’ve played and watched to research is a very specific style of camera movement. It was almost robotic in its speed and fluidity. That’s why we designed a move that requires a robotic arm. And we programmed the movement to move around the character as Guy sees everything he sees through these glasses. “Ohhhh, what’s going on?”
