A dramatic scene was played on Friday morning’s “The View” when the show’s hosts, Ana Navarro and Sunny Hostin, were asked to leave the set live after they both tested positive for the coronavirus.

“The View” had just returned from a commercial hiatus about 15 minutes into the show, and the four presenters were on the verge of introducing Vice President Kamala Harris for a face-to-face interview. ABC News was billing it as Ms. Harris’ first interview in the studio since she took office.

Then the turmoil started.

“Okay, we’re back, it looks like something is going on here that I’m 100 percent unaware of,” said Joy Behar, one of the hosts, as she looked around the set in bewilderment. “Can someone please explain the situation to me?”

In the background, a producer could be heard saying, “I need you two to get away for a second,” apparently pointing to Ms. Navarro and Ms. Hostin. They both left the set.

“Then shall I introduce the vice president?” said Mrs. Behar, looking at a producer.

“Yes,” replied the producer, another person on the screen “No!” before he barked.

“We’ll be right back when we’re in a tight spot, as we always do on TV,” said Ms. Behar, before the show abruptly entered a commercial break.

When “The View” returned after a five-minute break, Ms. Behar told the audience what had happened.

“Okay, as this is going to be big news anytime, Sunny and Ana apparently tested positive for Covid,” Ms. Behar said. “No matter how hard we try, these things happen, they probably have a breakthrough case. They’ll be fine, I’m sure because they’re both infused into wazoo.”

ABC News did not return requests for comment. Whoopi Goldberg, the fifth host of the show, was not on set on Friday.

For the next half hour, Ms. Behar and the remaining co-host Sara Haines struggled and took questions from the studio audience as they tried to “tap dance,” as Ms. Behar called it. Interviewed the vice president.

Ms. Harris was taken to a remote location and joined the show for a short interview via satellite during the last 10 minutes of the show.
