KASHIMA, Japan – In three games at the Tokyo Olympic football tournament, the United States scored beautiful goals and poachers’ goals and somehow five offside goals.

On Tuesday, the team failed to score and got exactly the result it needed. A 0-0 draw with Australia on a chilly night led the United States, a medal favorite whose belt dominance was questioned last week, to the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament.

The opponent the United States will face in Yokohama on Friday is still undetermined as they play a cautious, professional draw with Australia a few hours northeast of Tokyo. It will either be the Netherlands, an emerging European power that lost to the USA in the 2019 Women’s World Cup final, or Brazil, a regular hurdle at any major event.

But this latest news could have waited a few hours as the players left the field on Tuesday night.

for the United States team humble in an opening loss to Sweden and then gathered himself and with six goals scored against New Zealand on Saturday (and four offside goals that didn’t count), some confidence, a draw against a physically and potentially dangerous Australian team felt like good business.

When it was over, Coach Vlatko Andonovski returned and gave his assistants high fives as if he had won, and the players gathered with their friends from the Australian team.

Matildas, known as Australia’s known team, will now make the wait: They finished third in the group and will likely face a group winner as well.
