“Do you want to hear a scary story?”

That tempting question (or scary question from your point of view) kicks off the scene. from the new “Candyman” (in theaters now) is both a sequel and a re-imagining of Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror film.

The update is directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele (along with DaCosta and Win Rosenfield). It still includes the menacing figure following you if you say his name in front of the mirror five times, but this scene goes back to the story of the original movie.

Brianna (Teyonah Parris) and her brother Troy (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) are hanging out with their boyfriend one evening, while Troy turns on the lights and horror to tell a story. It’s about Helen Lyle (played by Virginia Madsen), one of the main characters from the previous movie, and how she “hit” it one day. Bloody murders and snow angels appear.

Troy’s story follows in the footsteps of the previous movie’s narrative with some embellishments. Instead of going back to the footage from the 1992 movie, the moments are depicted by shadow puppetry. Describing the series, DaCosta said he wanted each shadow puppet episode to be “narrator specific” because he saw it as “the way someone thinks about the story.” This is not necessarily true.” In this scene, the hands move the puppets to give a sense of how the storyteller Troy is also manipulating his story.
