From a supporting character in a video game character to his biggest star, Guy (Ryan Reynolds) receives new discoveries in a fast and colorful way.

In this scene, Guy, a bank teller whose workday leads predictably to a daily bank robbery, turns things around this time. He catches a robber, including the special glasses he’s wearing. When Guy wears them, he sees an entirely new layer of graphics that his town had missed before.

Discussing the scene, director Shawn Levy said he wanted to unravel this hidden chapter of the video game world using a vibrant visual motif with explosions of color and action everywhere.

“Obviously I wanted this sequence to be a little overwhelming for the audience,” Levy said, “because that’s exactly what Ryan’s character is going through.”

Levy said he played a lot of video games while researching the movie and noticed that the camera was less human-moved and instead “almost robotic in its speed and fluidity.” For this scene, he and his team tried to mimic this by mounting the camera on a robotic arm. They then programmed the arm to move around when Guy saw through his glasses. Levy said that since the move is code-locked, Reynolds had to be precise in his blocking to avoid being injured by the camera.
