‘We Must Do Something’ Review: I Guess I’ll Stay Inside

As if set for hurricane season, “We Have to Do Something” begins with a family of four thrown by storm in a large suburban bathroom. Then it turns out it’s not the weather: Melissa (Sierra McCormick), the moody teenager in the family, may have unleashed the powers of hellfire by playing dark magic pranks with a schoolmate.

Misrecommended spells are all American horror entertainment – “The Gate” (1987), in particular, remains burned in my brain – but the gamble here is to lock us in one room. The pressure cooker is on: alcoholic dad (Pat Healy) hectors mom (Vinessa Shaw), criminal panic wrecks Melissa. Flashbacks reveal that he and Amy (Lisette Alexis), the boring intense goth she hangs out with, have a general hexxing towards an obnoxious guy. Melissa’s younger brother, Bobby (John James Cronin, who has the spirit of Ralphie in “A Christmas Story”) is the innocent bystander of the story.

Closure is a classic testing ground for a horror director (there’s even a genre: the haunted house). Sean King O’Grady shoots his feature film debutcombines parental menace, teenage malaise, and creature effects (one boring, one absolutely delicious). The power of suggestion is the method chosen for the chaos outside – off-screen noises and noises – but despite some stylish craziness, the film’s buildup may not be a certain snap.

The concerns of the pandemic quarantine were apparently an inspiration for the movie, but bunker sequences from post-apocalyptic nuclear dramas may also come to mind. Some viewers, especially city folk, may marvel at the downright shocking expanse of the suburban bathroom.
