What do we really know about Harry Kane?

Everyone knows a lot about Harry Kane. There is the fact that he is the captain of England’s national football team; this is a status that confers on its holder the kind of profile that most athletes cannot access, especially during tournament years. It’s part of the furniture fame, the royal family fame. Everyone has heard of Harry Kane.

Then there are the goals. Harry Kane scores with astonishing efficiency. He scores goals with both feet and his head. He scores goals against good and bad teams at close range and from long range. It doesn’t seem really subject to things like form or confidence. He started scoring goals seven years ago and never stopped.

He’s currently scoring them for Tottenham Hotspur, but that could change soon. In preparation for Euro 2020, a series of interviews made it clear that in Harry Kane’s mind, he may need to continue after this summer if he wants to fulfill his passion for winning collective prizes rather than individual prizes.

There’s one more thing we know about Kane, but something that stands out above all else after last month.

“England is #1 for me,” Kane said in an interview with The New York Times weeks before the Euro. “This is the greatest thing you can achieve. I dreamed of playing for England but I also dreamed of winning something for England. This is at the top of my list.

“You play the Premier Leagues and Champions League every year, but a big tournament only comes every two years. The window is much smaller. To win something with England: That would be #1.”
