What is the price for an uncleaned hotel room?


“Last year was tough because I had panic attacks, anxiety attacks, and went to the emergency room twice,” he said in a Spanish interview in July.

Now he’s back to work in his capacity of duty, working one or two days a week, or not working at all for some weeks. “The job that used to be divided between multiple cleaners now falls to him alone,” he said. “I had to do it myself because they said they were understaffed,” he said, “but if they’re short, why don’t they call us? Why aren’t we working?”

Hilton spokesperson Ms Ryan said staffing levels were “informed by hotel and market demand as assessed by hotels, local business environments, as well as recommendations from government and health officials”.

“The pandemic has dictated a number of changes to our service model, with in many cases in-room daily cleaning becoming an optional service,” said Stonebridge Companies, the hospitality company that manages Hilton Seattle.

Julie Gabot, a 62-year-old maid in Hawaii, said her job had become more grueling than it had in the past. He’s worked at the Sheraton Waikiki for nearly 30 years, and his seniority meant he was guaranteed a job when hotel employees started getting back.

But rooms that once took 45 minutes to an hour now take twice as long to clean. Longer stays, which are now more common than before the pandemic, mean “more difficult at checkout,” Ms. Gabot said. During daily cleaning, items such as tampons to be cleaned, diapers or sand from beach trips accumulate.

“There is so much to do and now we are sterilizing everything,” said Ms. Gabot. “Now it’s time consuming.”
