What Jeff Bezos and His Crew Wear to Space


When Jeff Bezos launched into space on Tuesday, Apollo wasn’t channeling his astronauts in at least one aspect: his choice of tailoring.

Mr. Bezos, founder of Amazon, told NBC: “Today” Monday will show that she won’t need a traditional spacesuit for her 62-mile trip above Earth.

Mr. Bezos and three other crew members in the New Shepard capsule wore light flight suits with a bright sheen similar to the overalls worn by military pilots, perhaps even a NASCAR driver’s racing suit.

Appearing in images and videos released before the flight by Mr. Bezos and his fellow passengers, the blue suits have a mission patch on the upper left chest showing Blue Origin’s rocket launching into space.

“It feels good to be in a flight suit,” Mr. Bezos said in a promotional video released Monday. Instagram.

The crew member’s initials and surnames are engraved in white letters on the chest of the black embellished suits, and the name Blue Origin on the left sleeve. On the right sleeve is a flag patch similar to that worn by astronauts and fighter jet pilots – the American flag for the Bezos brothers and Wally Funk, and the Dutch flag for Oliver Daemen.

Blue Origin wasn’t the only company making distinctive fashion choices in its bid to conquer space specifically in the competition among billionaires.
