Ilona Maher has already become an Olympic star and has yet to take the field. The 24-year-old from Vermont and her US women’s rugby sevens team are seeking their first Olympic medal.

He turned to rugby at the age of 17 because his father played the sport at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont. The state is represented by three Olympians, including Maher, who took part in the first Summer Games.

“We’re not known for this athletic state,” Maher told The Burlington Free Press this month.

“Wherever you are from, they are great athletes and you can be a great athlete. I love Vermont and I love its community and culture. I can’t wait to return to Vermont after being at the Olympics to bring rugby back to the state and grow it even more there.”

Rugby sevens was first played for both men and women at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Australia, New Zealand and Canada won gold, silver and bronze respectively. U.S. women finished fifth.
