Will Smith on ‘King Richard’ and Secret Career Fear

I just heard that Denzel is the most nominated Black actor in history with this nomination. So, as soon as I hang up, I will post about it. [Denzel Washington on Tuesday earned his 10th Oscar nomination, for “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”]

Speaking of Denzel Washington, I also understand that 2002 was the first year two Black actors competed for best actor. Washington won for “Education Day” that year, and now 20 years later and you’re here again. How does this feel?

You know it’s funny, I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned that. So the two times I’ve been nominated before, I’ve only lost to Black players. I lost once to Denzel and it was Forest Whitaker next. So funny, Jada [Pinkett Smith, his wife] and I was talking about inclusion and all that [the issue of the lack of diversity among Oscar nominees over the years] and “I just lost to Black players!” I said. [Laughs].

Did you talk to the director of the movie?

Yes, we talked this morning. She is very calm and sweet. “Dude, your movie was nominated for best picture, you nominated a lot of your actors. You can laugh a little if you want.” He’s just so humble and happy for others. And what I love about it is that it never seems to reach itself. And even on set, that’s part of the beauty of what he’s been able to create.

You had a big and busy year with the premiere of “King Richard.” your memories, “Will” last autumn, your new Disney+ documentary about the planet and new Adaptation of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” next month. And now with this recognition, how do you plan to celebrate all this?

We celebrate by creating the next thing. We live in celebration of the fact that we do this for a living. It’s as if each day is a celebration of the gift of living and working. I don’t think of it in terms of “torment, counsel, counsel and celebrate”. For example, let’s be grateful for this opportunity, and gratitude is an important part of my belief in how you can create great things, live in constant gratitude. I don’t see the need to divide the time for celebration in this way.
