Under a plan that the California Energy Commission is expected to approve Wednesday, builders will need to incorporate solar and battery storage into commercial and high-rise multi-family projects.
The plan, which will take effect on January 1, 2023, also includes incentives to extract natural gas from new buildings and facilitate the addition of batteries to existing solar systems in single-family homes. The provisions will complement requirements that came into force last year that mandate new single-family homes and multi-family residences up to three stories high to include solar energy.
Wednesday’s vote is an important step before the California Building Standards Commission considers the requirement as part of approving all changes to the state’s building codes in December.
