Dozens of consumer websites were reported to be offline or slow to load on Thursday afternoon, creating headaches for people trying to access their accounts, but the issues were soon resolved.
A number of companies suffered outages, including financial firms like American Express and Chase, retailers like Amazon and Home Depot, and travel companies like Delta Air Lines and Expedia, according to online platform Downdetector.
Delta said on its website that it is working to resolve “a technology issue” affecting “many global websites”.
“You can continue to check-in for flights at the airport at this time,” Delta said in a statement.
The outages were reported after one of the largest cloud computing providers, Akamai, said it was experiencing problems with its DNS service, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether the Akamai outage was the source of all the problems elsewhere. One of the web’s most fundamental technologies, DNS helps direct requests for a particular URL to the server where that website is actually located.
Akamai also offers cached versions of pages from around the world, helping many companies make their sites faster and more reliable, but an outage in their network can render them unavailable.
Akamai approved connection problems were not the result of a cyber attack.
“There have been reports of problems with a Content Delivery Network (Akamai) outside the Amazon Network,” Amazon Web Services said. Declaration posted on the website. “We’ve researched AWS services like Amazon Route 53 and Amazon CloudFront, and all of these services are operating normally now.”
Zomato, an Indian food delivery company, also blamed Akamai for the cut. “Our app is not working due to a widespread internet outage (Akamai),” the company said. Posted on Twitter.
Just before 1 p.m. Eastern time, Akamai said it had fixed its problem.
“We have implemented a fix for this issue and the service is continuing its normal operations based on current observations.” Akamai said on Twitter.
In a seemingly unrelated incident, including several counties in Virginia Campbell and Grayson, they reported 911 systems corrupted. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office said on its Facebook page that the outage was due to fiber internet lines being cut, and 911 is still available on landline phones.
