Sometimes the outfits were not processed by Rikers in time for the court. fashion crises one day delayed court proceedings for almost an hour and a half because he refused sub-par substitutions. once i noticed a suitcase in the courtroom whose wardrobe is full of rejectsincluding long-sleeved and collared shirts, a light blue sleeveless dress (Ann Taylor, size 10), black pants (J. Crew, size 0), and a medium white button-down collar shirt from Gap.
It sounds very dramatic (and it was), but it wasn’t entirely Sorokin’s fault. A few years before his trial, a city council act Rikers has banned his overalls from the courtroom as potentially biased for juries. Even so, presiding Judge Diane Kiesel clearly hated the podium entrances and the robberies that preceded them – eventually explaining that if Sorokin didn’t show up to court right away (no matter how dressed she was), the trial would continue without her.
Accent
Sorokin’s almost untraceable accent is one of his most distinctive features. Born in a town 20 minutes outside of Moscow, he moved to Germany at the age of 15, but was shot down on his own at the age of 19, flying from Paris to New York. His accent is a mix of influences from everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
But did Garner get it right? All in all, I found Netflix Anna very nasal, words dice hard, every syllable executed very carefully. While Garner has captured the essence of the eccentricity of the accent, Sorokin’s actual voice is softer, his pronunciation more subtle.
So I wondered what Sorokin thought of his character on TV. “It’s really hard to say where it will come from,” he said. Garner’s version, like Anna’s, is a homeless voice that spans several continents and periods of Sorokin’s life. “He got it right, in a way,” Sorokin agreed.
