After the candidates are announced, all eyes are on the voters.
There are about 650 people who have voted for the Tony Awards, and most of them have some sort of stake in the theater industry: producers and actors, directors and designers, and even some journalists (although none of The New York Times’ involvement) such as conflicts of interest.
The deadline for voters to cast their votes is Friday, June 10, just two days before the awards ceremony. Voting is electronic, and voters are only required to vote in categories in which they see all candidates.
There’s some campaigning between now and then. Shows often send screenplays or broadcast recordings to voters, and sometimes a souvenir book or other promotional item. And many of the candidates are trying to stay in the public eye by giving more interviews during the voting period, performing at nonprofit galas, and presenting at theater-related conferences.
